Steve Jobs?introduced the slogan at Macworld just months after returning to Apple as interim CEO in 1997, telling the audience “you always had to be a little different to buy an Apple computer.” He went on to say… I think you had to really think differently when you bought a Mac.

There are two kinds of thinking.1. Convergent thinking is our normal state. When we hear a suggestion our instincts are to examine it, criticize it and analyze its consequences with particular emphasis on what might be wrong with it. 2. Divergent thinking- When we use divergent thinking we can generate all sorts of ideas that are not obviously connected with the original challenge or concept.

Einstein said, ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge.’ Divergent thinking allows us to use our imagination to explore all sorts of new possibilities.

Innovation is a question of mindset, and creating that mindset precedes everything else. In my opinion, it’s the innovation mindset that overrides the aspects of human nature that are often holding back innovation in large organizations.
