Think Differently !
Look at the picture above .What do you make out of it ?
Storytime .
The Vice President of a large banking Corporation , landed at the airport of a city, through which ran a river. She was there to bring some allignment in the business, and synergies within the departments , especially the Credit &Risk and Business & Sales , which traditionally have been at loggerheads .
Whereas Credit &Risk was inherently conservative , Business & Sales was aggresive in their approach towards business.
She had been told that the members of the staff she was visiting did not see themselves as one community or as one organisation . They were a divided lot , which is common in organisations where there is a lack of trust and allignment on the common organisational vision and goals .
She wondered how she might help them come together.
She was received at the airport by the departmental heads and as they drove to the office , one of the gentlemen pointed out many beautiful natural landmarks and described their significance.
Approaching a bridge across the local river, the Vice President said, “Tell me about the river that connects you.”
Both the departmental heads simultaneously responded, “You mean the river that divides us.”
Realizing that she had unknowingly tapped into the core story of the city's office culture , she said, “No, I mean the river that connects you.”
There was absolute silence .
As they reached the office and headed for the conference hall , where the VP was to speak, one of the departmental heads came forward and asked if he might say a few words to the group before she began.
The VP said, "Yes of course."
The Business & Sales head began by telling the story of the car ride to the office .And then he said, “She asked me and my colleague a very wise question. I was so set in my ways that I didn’t want to answer her question. It made me think differently about a lot of things.
I realized that she was right. We all need to think differently. We all need to talk about the river that connects us. I want to thank her for the wisdom of her question and welcome her to our region."
And there was a thunderous applause to welcome the lady and also the open mindedness of the seniors .
It is about the organisation that we owe our loyalty and allegiance . Thats foremost and supreme , than loyalty to individuals . Individuals will come and go . The organisation can be a living organisation for times to come , for if ,we care .
Think Bigger, Better, Bolder, Beyond and Before Others . Be Somebody !
