Think cybersecurity isn’t your problem? Here's why you're wrong

Email fraud, attacks, shutdowns, disruptions. They’re increasingly common occurrences, often with surprisingly innocuous beginnings.

More than 90% of cyber attacks start with an email – usually in the form of phishing, a tactic used by fraudsters to trick people into revealing sensitive information such as user names, passwords, and even credit card details.

The fast rise of cybercrime – and its huge economic ramifications – has forced governments around the world to take stock. Many corporates have quickly added a seat in the boardroom for the function.

In releasing Australia’s first Cyber Security Strategy last April, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said cybersecurity can no longer be ignored, or left in the hands of the IT department. Government statistics say the average cybercrime incident costs $276,323 to recover from.

“We must convince leaders, at board level and corporate sector and government levels, that cyber is one of their essential functions,” Mr Turnbull said.

Today, cyber threats come thick and fast. Two thirds of the 205 billion emails sent around the globe each day are said to contain unwanted content, and studies have found just 3% of people could consistently identify the difference between a phishing email and a legitimate message when presented with 10 samples.

To help educate executives about the new world of risk, I've penned a jargon-free guide to navigating cybercrime.

It has attracted high praise from Dan Tehan MP, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Cyber Security:

“It is easy to read, it is understandable, I think it’s the sort of publication that we do need to get being read in every single boardroom in Australia.” - Dan Tehan MP
