Think, Believe and Be Yourself

Story time....

Picture below is the the photo mum took of me moments before I left a Sydney hotel with my colleagues to attend an awards ceremony to celebrate customer service excellence nation wide, we flew all the way from Adelaide to attend the night in Sydney.

My mom was very nervous and excited that day, she didn’t attend because it was a work event but she was telling me all the way to Sydney that she have a feeling in her heart that the organisation that I work for will win the awards. She said with a very strong and comforting middle eastern accent: “mom, go and enjoy your time you will definitely be the winning organisation”.

I’ve always thought my mom was very optimistic, but it definitely made me feel motivated and also proud of the people I work with and off course I transferred that optimistic energy to them.

One hour and 30 minutes from the photo my mom took, our organisation won the Customer Service Organisation of the year in Australia!! we all felt so fulfilled and happy and I started telling everyone “ See!! See!! I told you we will win!”

Everyone felt that the trip all the way to Sydney was worth it! We finally were going to see our boss dancing on top of the table as she promised she'll do if we win! We were so excited and started emailing the media department in our organisation to prepare the social and media release announcements for the next day. Nothing is compared to successful team effort!

But just when we were about to start getting over the feeling of excitement winning a national award in customer service and also after few glasses of happy delicious champagne, the Awards judges went up on stage and suddenly everything went into silence. I could hear whispers in the room and companies that were attending did not expect them to be presenting an award not previously listed and definitely both of them together.

The judges took the stage from the MC of the night and one of them came close to the microphone and with a very shy but strong voice she welcomed the guests and wished they are all having a good night, she said that they are up on stage to present an award they created specifically inspired by an individual, they said the person they are giving this award has shown unbelievable skills in customer service, she continued ‘he has struck the ideal balance of fulfilling his role responsibilities while letting his own authentic and genuine personality shine through, his natural desire to help customers made the CSIA award judges feeling very special’ - more whispers coming from the crowd really wondering if that person was from their own organisation.... some were organisations worth billions of dollars.

We were all looking at the screen to see the name of this unique individual, I was even intrigued too ??

Suddenly I start feeling really cold, I can’t hear anything anymore, just feels very strange... why I am being pushed to stand up while my directors and colleagues smiling and the "shocked" look on their faces, some of them crying of happiness? Why everyone in the ballroom was looking at me and my name in massive font on the screens, lights were all shining in the center of our table, everyone is clapping and my legs are shaking... my life is about to change forever.

Winner of the first ever Australian Extraordinary Customer Service Award.... while my manager hugged me & pressing me against her chest holding me so tight and while being told by camera men and stage directors to start moving to get up on stage... I only remember this feeling:

I felt that my entire life was an image about myself and that short 30 seconds while I am walking from the table in the middle of ballroom up to go on stage, my own image of myself completely changed. I started feeling that wonderful and magnificent joy of ‘If I can do this I can do anything’.

If that was you in this story, you would definitely be a different person now. But I have two questions for you: does it have to be you? Do you have to win something to start believing in yourself?

The answer is no. You only have to know two things, you should know where you want to go and you should also know that you are going to get there ????
