Things Turned Out Differently Than Expected

Things Turned Out Differently Than Expected

This year turned out to be much different than I had expected. Last winter we took off from #SLC to head for #Dallas. I had a killer job opportunity.

Well, after three months of being there, the company could no longer fund my position for the compensation we originally agreed on.

I’ve always wanted to do my own thing. I mastered in #organizationalpsychology with the full intent on owning my own practice and becoming a #speaker and an #executivecoach.

The rest of the year changed on a dime the day I went to work and lost that job, but it my life turned in an even better direction. With the infinite, unwavering support of my wife, I started my own #journey.

It’s been a rollercoaster, but a fun one! I’m going to share with you some highlights of my year so that if you’re considering starting your own business, you may feel motivation that though it’s leap of faith, financially difficult, and a million others things, it’s all worth it.

1. Lost my job.

2. Started my own company (The J.B. Melton Group) and created my first at-home office.

3. Got to see my favorite musician and one of my heroes again in person (Justin Furstenfeld of @blueoctoberband ).

4. My wife and I celebrated 6 years of marriage.

5. We went on a few trips.

6. I spoke over two dozen times.

7. I networked liked crazy and met some of the most amazing people ever.

8. #LinkedIn became a HUGE part of my life.

9. I wrote my first book, “Minimalize to Maximize Your Happiness: Cut The Crap (print, Kindle, and a Workbook edition).

10. I lined up over a dozen paid speaking engagements for 2019.

11. Started a coaching program, “Kick 2019’s Butt,” an 8-week habit-transformation program to cut your downhill habits and achieve your uphill dreams.

12. I got in connection with one of the groups I am most passionate about helping (@touretteassociation).

13. Been on featured in Forbes, a few radio shows, over 20 podcasts, a dozen interviews, etc.

14. Have some SUPER opportunities coming with some FANTASTIC people.

15. Became a partner in a business group alongside some killer #entrepreneurs and business owners.

16. Grew closer to the #Lord.

Happy New Years! Thanks for everything! #2019 ????

Such an amazing and inspiring story! Isn't it interesting how things happen as they are suppose to and not as we expect them to.

Jake,??Things Turned Out Differently Than Expected....as they often do.?? But you chose to make it a great story...through a lot of hard work, and facing risk and uncertainty with relentless determination.? Bravo!? Well done.? Great inspiration for us/others.? I know I am late to the party, but best wishes to you in the months and years ahead.?? One of my favorite tidbits of great counsel in recent times comes from a song written by Lori McKenna and first released/sung by Tim McGraw in January 2016 -- it won Song of the Year" at 2016 CMA Awards and "Country Song of the Year" at 2016 American Music Awards,?Video of the Year" at the 2016 CMT Music Awards, and? Best Country Song at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. I was watching the CMA Awards show that year, and super happy and more than a bit surprised that this song, with these sentiments won THE song of the year.? I just goes to show that people do believe in the the wisdom...but how living it is such a very different matter. When the dreams you're dreamin' come to you When the work you put in is realized Let yourself feel the pride but Always stay humble and kind I look forward to see all the good you can do.? Press on. God bless.
