THINGS ABOUT SELF-PUBLISHING THAT NEED REPEATING

1.?? It is a Reality that is Here to Stay

Self-publishing has emerged as a strong competitor in the world of publishing. Even well-known authors are choosing to self-publish, and some have even gained fame through this route. It is now an essential element in the world of writing. There are many exceptional self-published works that showcase superb storytelling. Anyone who looks down on the practice should reconsider their attitude.

?

2.?? Don’t Think of it as a Publishing “Alternative”

Self-publishing is not a cure-all solution; it does not guarantee success and is not necessarily a better or smarter route compared to more traditional methods. However, it is also not an inferior path. Each path has its own challenges and rewards, just as each path offers its own breathtaking views and thrilling journeys. Self-publishing may bring in profits faster and provide higher returns for each book sold, but it also requires a greater sense of independence and places more responsibility on the author's shoulders. In self-publishing, the author must work tirelessly to earn their living.

?

3.?? Self-Publishers Must Be More Than Just Writers

This applies to all writers, regardless: In today's world, every author must take on a greater role in promoting their work. But for self-published writers, the workload is even heavier. You become a jack of all trades - a carnival barker, web designer, customer service representative, CEO.? The point is, you are now in charge of publishing your own work, with all the tasks and responsibilities that come with it. If you don't want to take on those responsibilities, then self-publishing may not be for you.

?

4.?? While It Has Gotten Better, There is a Lot of Junk on Amazon

It's important to reiterate this point. Unfortunately, there are still many self-published books that are simply terrible and do not represent good writing, storytelling, or publishing practices. Despite what some may argue, these books can sometimes become successful and reach high rankings on platforms like Kindle Charts.

While it's true that traditional publishing also produces its fair share of bad books, the goal for self-publishing should be to strive for better quality. I know that even the worst celebrity book meets basic standards compared to some disasters posing as books in the self-publishing world.

?

5.?? For the Sake of the Profession, Don’t Be One of Them

Treat your book with the same care and attention as a published novel. Don't view it as some mutant creature with only half of its potential realized.

Send out copies for reviews and seek endorsements from authors. Polish its appearance and make sure it reads well. Make sure your book exudes confidence and receives the recognition and esteem that other books in its genre may lack. It should stand out as the top choice on the shelves of any bookstore.

?

6.?? The Future of Self-Publishing is Up to You

Let me make this clear: investing some money may be necessary. However, the result is worth it. Having a high-quality product instead of a subpar amateur performance will pay off in the long run.

Keep in mind, there is no guarantee that you will make back those expenses. That's just how running a business goes. And being a self-published author is like starting a small business.

But investing the resources not only gives you the best chance for this book, but also the best chance for your entire career.

?

7.?? Editors Are Your Best Friends

Having a superb editor is crucial.

The numbers don’t lie.? Successful books are the ones that have been edited.

Books that have not been edited do not do as well.? Period.? End of Sentence.? Get it Edited.

?

8.?? Yes, Agents are Gatekeepers, but Are Still Your Friends

We naturally feel that those who can bar entrance to a place we want to go are against us.? They are not.? They are simply keeping high standards for their profession.? Don’t take it personally.

Instead, if an agent has given you feedback that your book is not ready to be published, take them seriously.? Don’t just decide to self-publish instead.

If the book is not good enough for traditional, it is not good enough for self-publishing.?

Follow their recommendations and suggestions.?

Agents can still help you know when a book is ready for market.? And they still have access to TV, Film, and many foreign markets that you cannot get through self-publishing.? Work with agents.? They are still a great asset.
