Things to improve at baseline

Things to improve at baseline

We all know how we should play. How are we really playing when the balls coming to you fast is a totally different story. If you have read about the improvement cycle, you will understand very well what I am talking about.

I have noticed many issues of me playing tennis. Here is a few important ones to improve.

Body Weight

We all know that we should use our body weight. It adds power and let us stay in control. I am not doing a good job at times, where I am hitting balls with back foot or side ways.

This one is even worse where I am hitting with wrong foot in front.

Arm to the sky

Another common issue is arm to the sky. I can understand why I am doing it. I am trying very hard to get the ball to curve in. I have to do this because I am not turning my body enough in those shots. I have to rely on my arm and hand to maneuver the ball in.

The correct way to handle this is to turn the body then drive the ball. By turning the body, there is no need to swing the arm to the sky to get the ball in the right direction.

Defense lob

At times I have to hit defense lobs. I didn't lob the ball high enough to pass the players, especially both of them are on the net. I was getting smashed by the players in front. First, I need to make sure it has enough height. It is harder for the opponent to hit if the ball is higher (thus drop faster). I should also aim to be behind them so they have to run back.

Too close to the ball

I am pretty good at movement and can reach the ball in time, but I have the tendency of moving too close to the ball. I am in a way moving too well and jam myself. The followings are all the ball where I can't hit with power because I have to bend the arm in a awkward way to hit the ball. I should be able to hit the ball much faster if I give myself more space.

Now, back to the improvement cycle. Hope the next cycle is better than this one!
