Things I Can't Live Without: Music

Music is something that can lift my spirits easily when I’m having a difficult time. It motivates me when I need to get things done, and even helps me relax when I need to take a break. A couple of years ago I was helping to care for a woman with dementia. One of her favorite activities was to listen to music.??

One thing I noticed was when she listened to some of the older country songs it was making her sad. When we switched to something a bit more upbeat, her mood shifted immediately.

Music can be a powerful tool to help us switch our focus.?I’ve learned to use music as a tool to help me through my day. Different music produces different results.??

For example: if I’m driving in traffic and in a hurry, plug in something soft and relaxing, like the Carpenters, John Denver, Frank Sinatra, etc.??

When it’s time to clean the house, I plug in some good old-fashioned oldies, like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Bee Gees, etc. Before I know it, the house is clean and I’m ready to move on to the next thing.?

When I’m writing or studying, classical music, specifically baroque is best. Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, etc., works to help me focus and relax into it.?

Music is a constant companion and can help me focus or shift my emotions when necessary to keep me moving.?

Have you noticed music shifting your emotions?

What music moves you??

Do you think music could help you work more efficiently?

Let us know in the comments.

I love a good Zumba class, but while working - nope! My busy brain needs complete silence to focus.

My husband has lists of a huge variety of music he rotates through while getting ready in the morning. His Latino list (which is titled, “shaving music”) really gets us going.??

Love this, Tammy! I l love baroque music -- it's my favorite form of classical. I used to listen to music when I cleaned houses during my college years in Chico (a great way to earn extra money when you don't have a car!). I knew a guy who used to listen to country music all the time, but was really struggling with depression. When he STOPPED listening to that (which always included sad stories of loss and hurt), he finally got past the depression. I choose the type of music I want to listen to based on my mood. Bach is my favorite for baroque. But I noticed that you also mentioned John Denver -- I loved his songs back in the '70s. I even considered moving to Colorado because of "Rocky Mountain High"! ??
