Things that I always wanted to do

Christopher DeLong

My mother was never one to talk about death. Any time you brought it up around her, she always changed the subject. At the age of forty-seven, her fear came true with her own death from a heart attack. I still remember the call that I received in the afternoon and the several hour drive to see her at the funeral home. Why do we fear death so much, and what do we want to do before we die ourselves?

I used to work in life insurance and experienced death on a daily basis. People handle it in many different ways and none of them are easy for most people. The idea that if I had only had done this, or gone there before they had died, was my own and that of many other people. The possible was now impossible and irreversible. So, the thought is there, in my mind and maybe in yours, what would I like to do before I die?

If you think about it, most everything is possible. My personal barrier is money and it might be yours too. There are so many places to see, cars to drive, things to eat and experiences to experience. Where would my loved ones like to go and what would they like to do? I imagine that part of my dreams would include their dreams as well. I guess I never really talked to them about what they would like to do and probably should do that after I finish writing this. So here I am, at my mother-in-law’s for the weekend and I am sitting in the office with a fan blowing on me. I feel like I have seen so much already, and certainly feel privileged, but let me take some shots at some big dreams.

?1.????I would like to fly in a fast jet, like a fighter jet.

2.?????I would like to be able to talk to more people and reach more people through a website or other avenue. I believe that English can change lives and open opportunities.

3.?????I would like to drive a really fast car, like a Bugatti, Tuatara or Hennessey.

4.?????I would like to take my family to Bora Bora.

5.?????I would like to set up some scholarships in the school that I went to for students that do not have the capability to pay for school like I didn’t.

6.?????I would like to go to space.

7.?????I would like to take some people that are visionaries, but do not have the money to execute what they have created, and get them started in their own company.

8.?????I would like to………………..

It feels really weird to write this short list. I almost feel selfish doing so and fear the repercussions of sounding so egotistical. There is a barrier in my mind because I do not want to appear self-centered and do not consider myself to be. What would your list include and do you already have one?
