Things To Do, So No Time for You!

Things To Do, So No Time for You!

More and more I am hearing about leaders who don’t take time to do One-on-Ones with the people who report to them. I would say they don’t “have” the time, but it’s really not that. Everyone can do what they wish with their time. So they are just are not taking the time to meet with their potential stars in their organization.

Perhaps you are one of the leaders who say that you are a working manager, so you have too much to do, but that means you put time with your people low on your list of priorities and that your projects are more important.

Perhaps this is your WAKE-UP CALL: Today’s generations AND even previous ones need frequent One-on-Ones. They want to know what you’re thinking in real time. When you take the time to sit down to tell them about the great things they’re doing they will do more of those great things. It’s that simple.

I work with one leader who is a genius in his field, but who left his organization before being there one year.

At an exit interview I conducted after he left, he said that the CEO kept saying he was going to meet with him, but after nine months he just never found the time to sit down for a One-On-One.

I know of a few other leaders who are being courted by other organizations and may leave their present organization because there is never enough time to have the ears of the leader.

I know it’s hard to set a schedule of One-on-Ones in your calendar, but put them in so that they are set for eternity. You will be showing your people that they matter to you today as much as they did the day you offered them the job.
