Things To Do In 10 Minutes To Further Your Job Search

Only have 10 minutes to work on your job search? Review this list so you can quickly pick a task to execute instead of spending that time figuring out what you should be doing. Choose from the activities below or come up with your own!

Apply:

  • Apply for an advertised position
  • Submit resume to recruiting firm or employment agency
  • Apply for a job posted on LinkedIn

Schedule:

  • Sign up for a volunteer opportunity in an industry professional association
  • Schedule a lunch or coffee meeting
  • Set up an informational interview

Network:

  • Connect with a past co-worker
  • Reach out to a past classmate
  • Touch base with a reference
  • Email someone you know to let them know you’re job searching
  • Reach out to a recruiter
  • Look up possible events to attend to network
  • Send a LinkedIn message to an existing connection
  • Send a LinkedIn connection request

Research:

  • Brainstorm a list of 10 people you can reach out to
  • Research an employment agency or recruiting firm
  • Look at USAJOBS or other specific website) for 10 minutes for job openings
  • Research potential professional associations to join/get involved in
  • Look for a class, workshop, course, or training to build my skills
  • Research a target company (look at their website and social media accounts)
  • Look up salary data for the job title I’m interested in

Follow Up:

  • Reach out to a hiring manager about an interview
  • Follow-up with a recruiter you’ve already talked to
  • Email someone who hasn’t returned your phone call
  • Call someone who hasn’t responded to your email

Miscellaneous:

  • Post on social media about your job search (if you’re not conducting a confidential job search)
  • Update your Job Search Tracker (organize your applications, next steps, and follow-up activities)
  • Set up a Job Alert on a job search website (i.e., USAJOBS, Indeed, etc.)
