ARE THINGS BETTER FOR WOMEN IN POP & FILM MUSIC?
“The inequality and lack of diversity that you see across classical music reflects the lack of opportunity that women face across all musical genres.” Gabriella Di Laccio
Our latest study?Equality & Diversity in Global Repertoire?has shown that there is a continuous lack of equality diversity in classical music. No news there.
But often we hear the comments: Oh, but women are doing much better in other music genres… Are they?
Here you can see our latest analysis of names credited as ‘Music by’ or “Composer’ on the official credits for the top 100 Grossing Movies of 2021.
The results?
Only 5.7% are women.
The total box office for these movies comes to $822,009,764,000 (yes, there are a lots of zeros…)

In POP Music, things look slightly better at first, but when you look closer, the story seems to repeat itself. We analysed the End of Year Singles Chart Top 100 – 2021published by the UK Official Charts

We can see more women taking space as performers and songwriters (although not even close a more than deserved 50%).
But when we look at music production, the numbers are consistently low with only 5.02% of the women credited as producers and only 1.67% being women from global majority.
The reality is: we have no more excuses for these kind of statistics.
“The only thing that separates women and all global majority people from a Grammy, an Ivors, a job, a CD of the year, a movie credit, an Oscar, etc… is opportunity.”
