Is There Such a Thing as Good Data-Driven Policy-Making?

Ah, politics. Isn't it the best? It's an election year in the United States and I'm sure everyone will agree it's the most wonderful time...yeah, no. Politics is terrible!

I'm sure it's true in most, if not all, countries. Everyone is yelling at each other, no one is listening, politicians just appeal to their base, there is no consensus or compromise, and policy is driven by tribalism, not data.

And yet, we consider ourselves a data-driven culture.

In some ways we are. We use data to make decisions all the time - in our personal and professional lives. But in policy-making, it can be much more difficult.

What to do?

Lesson: Data-Driven Decision-Making

In this lesson, I explain why it is that data-driven decision-making is so hard for humans and share a couple of ideas to help address this very serious challenge.

Listen: Data-Driven Policy-Making with DJ Patil

DJ Patil was the first US Chief Data Scientist, appointed by Barack Obama . He knows a thing or two about data and policy-making! In this far-ranging conversation, he shares great insights about our use of data across history, how it is used in policy-making (and society more broadly) today, and lots of ideas for improving things for the future.
