Is there such a thing as the best Mac setup?
Part 2.
As I mentioned in Part 1, I try to run a tied process to ensure there is no clutter on my Mac. With only 128GB of SSD, you have to be mindful of space and also who likes to work on a cluttered OS. Spending a bit of time thinking about your file workflow will greatly help with day-to-day task and save you tons of time on the long run.
One of the key tool to tidy up your set up is Hazel which I use for 2 main reasons:
- Keeping the Trash Bin light
- Create rules to automatically keep my files organized
Hazel sits in your System Preferences panel.
And offers a simple, intuitive and powerful interface.
The way I use it for Trash folder management is quick straightforward.
Checkin the "enable App Sweep" Option will also help get rid of junk files especially if (like me) you like to try new Apps if only for a few days sometimes (you never know when you are going to find a very useful app :)
The real value of Hazel is with the Folder & File Management feature. As this is rules based algorithm, sky is the limit in terms of what you can do with it. Here is an interesting article with some concrete examples.
As for me, i use it to manage my downloads folder in a few ways:
Deleting Old files unless they have a Red tag:
Redirecting specific content to specific Folders:
Which I can then automatically delete which is really useful with Screenshots for example.
The exact workflow goes like this:
Screenshot is taken using the traditional (Shift + Command + 4) which is then translated into a Dropbox link using its "Share screenshots using Dropbox" options.
which are then moved to the "Pictures" folder and subject to the "Delete OLD Screenshots" above.
And I am only scratching the surface...
Follow up: Moom is da BOMB!!!!!! If you are tired of monkeying around with window sizings and placements, this rocks.
Laurent, these are great! Keep them coming.
