They’ve got it covered..Ohio Univeristy alumni photograph DNC Convention in Chicago

After covering the 2024 Paris Olympics, veteran photographer Frank Franklin II of The Associated Press traveled to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention (August 19-22), seven times zones from Paris.

At the summer Olympics, Franklin and other top-tier photojournalists trained at Ohio University documented the competition for a global audience. Likewise in Chicago, talented alumni photographed the DNC Convention, including:

  • Ruth Fremson , who joined The New York Times in 2000 after five-plus years at The Associated Press. Based in Seattle, Fremson studied at the graduate level at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication.
  • Haijun Jiang, a New York Times photo fellow based in Washington, DC; she graduated from Ohio University in 2022 (Masters of Fine Arts).
  • Maddie McGarvey is a Columbus-based freelancer (Class of 2012 Ohio Univeristy/Photojournalism) who worked with The New York Times team at the DNC Convention in Chicago.
  • Hyosub Shin of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC). The AJC’s photo gallery of convention highlights on August 22 began with Shin’s photo of Vice President Kamala Harris; the gallery was stocked with other photos by Shin.

The Washington Post’s coverage of the DNC Convention included a lengthy article published August 18: “Black female pioneers in politics reflect on Harris’s nomination.” ?It featured McGarvey’s photo of Jennette Bradley who served as lieutenant governor of Ohio from 2003 to 2005 and Ohio state treasurer from 2005 to 2007.

The New York Times’ convention highlights of Day 2 led with McGarvey’s photo of former President Barack Obama addressing delegates at the United Center. The Times’ highlights of Day 3 started with photos of Oprah Winfrey at the podium and convention delegates in the stands. The photo credit:? Haiyun Jiang.

Fremson’s convention photos included President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a tan suit on the first day of the convention.

Franklin’s widely published images showed protests outside the United Center.

Franklin was part of the team of AP photographers that won the?2021 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography for images showing the national response to the death of George Floyd.

Fremson is the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes, as a member of the Times team that won the?2002 Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the September?11 terrorist attacks and the protracted conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Forty-six visual journalists from Ohio Univeristy have won Pulitzer Prizes, said Tim Goheen, director of the School of Visual Communication.?
