‘They’re my friends’
I took Stanley, aged 4, to play in his local park. He ran ahead excitedly to join a family in the playground.
I heard the family’s mother say, 'Hello Stanley', and then the kids were off playing enthusiastically on the swings.
When I caught up, I asked Stanley if he knew them. 'They're my friends', he said. 'From nursery?' 'Yes'.
A few minutes later when she arrived, Stanley's mother informed me, 'No, they’re not his friends'. In fact, he’d never met them before.
Now rather than seeing this as my exercise in irresponsible childcare, let's consider Stanley's attitude as a great lesson for trainers and facilitators.
