Like so many of our members and sisters, whose TNX journey begins with the search for a place of belonging with open, welcoming arms, Soror Zaniyaa (Zuh-NIGH-Yuh) Baptiste learned of Theta Nu Xi during a time when she was feeling the weight of attending a PWI (predominantly white institution). A student at the University of Georgia, she was knee-deep in her push for equality and to be heard on campus.?

In the Spring of 2021, Zaniyaa emerged as #2 ONEyx from the Astral Sapphire line of the Alpha Sigma chapter of Theta Nu Xi.?

“My favorite TNX memory is joining Theta Nu Xi with my line sister, Jasimin,” Zaniyaa says. “We became best friends through the [intake] process, so it was nice crossing the finish line with her!”

Today, on ?????????????????????????? ??????????’?? ??????, Zaniyaa is celebrating not only the success of women around the world, but also her own personal feats. As part of Japan’s JET Programme, Zaniyaa completed a rigorous application process before being selected as an Assistant Language Teacher teaching English in the countryside of Kyoto.?

“Working as a teacher in another country has taught me so much about life in Japan and in general,” says Zaniyaa. “I feel like I have become a better person because of this opportunity!”

Even though she lives in a new apartment over 7,000 miles away from her home in Georgia, Zaniyaa finds ways to be involved with Theta Nu Xi from abroad. As an active member, she has participated in recruitment activities with the Alpha Nu chapter at Emory University, attended a number of virtual programming events from the national organization in addition to programming from other chapters.?

“I am honestly happy I did so because I got to know some of the sisters there a lot more,” says Zaniyaa. “I’ve also been helping out with my chapter's Instagram page, but my post-making skills are not great, haha!”?

Despite her “post-making” imposter syndrome, Zaniyaa’s commitment is making a difference in a sorority she loves. She is, no doubt, a “living example of sisterhood.”?

“Being so far away is my motivation to be involved because maintaining those connections back home is so important to me,” says Zaniyaa. “Participating in sorority activities also keeps me tied to what's going on in America, so it’s been a nice experience for sure! I think showing up and just being active in different events is a great way to help the sorority inside and out!”

Zaniyaa hopes to return home in a few years and work as an interpreter or with an embassy stateside. When she returns, we’ll be excited to welcome her back to in-person sorority activities. She says, “Convention always looks like it's so much fun, and I want to meet sisters from all over the country!”?

Zaniyaa says she’s been inspired by members participating in ways they can, even for other chapters virtually. “Seeing sisters interact with each other and getting involved makes you feel motivated.” How’s that for “for all my life?”

“I wish I joined the sorority sooner because joining has been one of the best decisions of my life,” says Zaniyaa. “I truly do believe we have the best sorority in the world because it's filled with such great people!”?
