9 Ways to Improve Your First Impression in 10 Minutes or Less

I read a lot of books filed in the “self-help” section at my local bookstore. While I dig reading advice about how I can improve myself, my life, and my work long-term, sometimes I just want a little instant gratification. Sometimes, quick how-tos that you can act on now are the best kind of advice. And folks? This is that kind of article.

Read on for my results-right- now tips for improving your first impression ASAP.

1. Practice a one-sentence introduction.

Think: “Hi, I’m Coach Ron Nash and I show people how to land their dream job.” Do it in the mirror until you’ve got it down without stumbling—and without laughing at yourself.

2. Get input on your handshake.

Do you want to go out there and crush your future boss’ metacarpals? No. Work on that sucker with a friend first (and apologize as often as necessary).

3. Source a critique on your go-to networking or interviewing outfit.

There are a slew of safe places to do this online, from Facebook to LinkedIn Groups to fashion-oriented subreddits. Make sure to get feedback from people in your industry.

4. Figure out fixes for nervous habits.

Hair twirling or nail-picking? Put a drink or a pen in your hand. Pulling at your clothes or constantly checking your reflection? Set out an outfit that always sits right, no matter what you do.

5. Test out your style.

No matter the situation, you don’t want to be focused on flaking hair gel,

running mascara, or lipstick on your teeth. Get it under control before you step into the room.

6. Snap a new profile picture.

Aim for bright lighting, a neutral background (think: brick wall, light- colored wall, green grass, an out-of- focus cafe or office), and professional clothing, hair, and makeup.

7. Revise your email signature.

Include a job title (or the fact that you’re looking for a new position), your contact information, any accreditations (if they’re important in your line of work), and a link to your LinkedIn profile.

8. Proofread your LinkedIn profile.

Not great with spelling and grammar? Neither am I! That’s why I run everything I write through web tools like Grammarly to ensure I don’t make embarrassing mistakes that might turn off people I want to impress.

9. Organize your bag.

If you bring a purse, a backpack, a briefcase, a laptop case—anything with you on a professional outing, clean it out. Toss the trash, recoil your cords, put personal items in a separate section or insert, and put pens, paper, business cards, and any other items you might need to access quickly in a handy spot. You don’t want to be rifling around for a pen in front of a CEO.
