Thesis Matters

Thesis Matters

A huge part of the clientele of anyone who offers editing services as I do would be student writing their master's thesis or dissertations. As a result, I created content to appeal to these folks.

In all, I believe I have about five articles that speak directly and generally to students who need to get their master's thesis edited. Here they are below:

  1. Thesis Editing: A Complete Guide
  2. How to Write a Master's Thesis: A Complete Guide
  3. How to Complete Your Master's Thesis on Time.

This cluster is far from complete. One topic I have not included. Students would want to know whether or not AI can be used to edit or even write their theses. I already made a post about this explaining why it's not a good idea. Let me just repeat it here in the next paragraph.

AI Shouldn't Be Used in Academic Writing

Maybe, don't put too much trust in AI to write your thesis, despite the hype! Well, I could be biased. You could say I'm an editor speaking out against the machine threatening my profession. But the hype around AI can be explained not by its utility, but by something else.

Namely, SEO. SEO, if you don't know, stands for search engine optimization. SEO experts use tools to see what keywords or terms are trending or what terms people are searching for on Google. It turns out that many of you, dear readers, are asking Google questions about using AI to write. SEO experts respond by writing articles and postson blogs and LinkedIn about how to use which AI tool to boost your writing.

Using AI for your thesis runs the risk of committing plagiarism.

They do so. Because it drives traffic and engagement to their sites. There is little chance that Google would rank a one-sentence article that says "No, you shouldn't use AI for your thesis." So, the SEO-savvy writers write long blogs detailing how you can use AI to rank. It also gives the false impression that AI is a magic cure.

True, you can use AI for blogs, LinkedIn, and other forms of writing. But not academia. In academic writing, plagiarism is among the worst formsof unethical misconduct that you can commit. AI tools are not advanced enough to safeguard against it. The amount of time and energy it would take for you to ensure that your writing is plagiarism-free after using AI means that you should go the conventional route.

This means learning how to quote, paraphrase, and summarize. You can check out the EminentEdit article here:

Do your work manually without using AI. Adopting best academic practices is the best option. This means:

  • Start your work early to beat deadlines
  • Use good models to follow
  • Use your friends for feedback and editing

Of course, you can also hire professional editors. This would be especially useful for students who have English as a foreign language. Remember, academics would prefer to read your "bad English" than the robot talk written by AI in perfect English Grammar. Good luck with your research writing!
