I believe the earth is not dead because it contains an abundance of free energy. The abundance of free energy on Earth keeps the planet thriving in all of its activities. The sun plays an important role in replenishing the earth's free energy and keeping it alive, G = H-TS.

Is the earth’s entropy increasing?

Earth is transporting its entropy to the atmosphere. The earth is an irreversible system far from equilibrium.

The fact is Earth is not an isolated system. It is its greatest advantage. Earth has an atmosphere that surrounds it. The earth is a non-equilibrium system, and the sun determines the energy gradient between the sun and the earth. The Earth generates entropy, which it then transports to the atmosphere. Day and night are nearly equal on Earth. When there is no sun and the surface temperature is low, Earth generates more entropy Q/T1 in the atmosphere than when the sun is present when the surface temperature T2 is higher than T1. Q/T1 > Q/T2.

What is happening to the atmosphere’s entropy?

The atmosphere is also a non-equilibrium system like earth. The effect of buoyant forces that cause the rise of less dense (warmer) air, the descent of more dense air, and the transformation of water from liquid to vapour (evaporation) and condensation is described in atmospheric thermodynamics. The force of the pressure gradient modifies these dynamics.

Atmosphere entropy is increasing. The entropy production in the atmosphere is based on atmospheric processes, wind, precipitation, chemical reactions, electrical activity, and heat transfer. The entropy of the atmosphere is increasing.

What is excess entropy?

Excess is defined as the difference between the entropies of the liquid and the ideal gas under identical density and temperature conditions.

Can the atmosphere reach a state of excess entropy?

?That would mean, it will cut off the supply of entropy. That would be a disaster. Not only, the atmosphere would stop generating its own free energy but it will also move towards equilibrium with the earth cutting off earth’s free energy generation. That would be the death of the earth.

The Sun is a savior

The atmosphere will never reach equilibrium as long as the sun exists. As long as the sun provides energy to the atmosphere, it will continue to thrive. Earth is as well.
