Thermal Imaging Illustrates Inadequate Insulation

Missing insulation can allow heat and cooling losses within the interior, as this infrared image?

illustrates. Don’t let the cozy furnishings fool you: the purple-ish areas under the couch indicate temperatures that are much cooler than the better-insulated flooring in the middle of the room.

This second image shows that same living room, only this time it is a thermographic image. While the couch and much of the surrounding area is in yellows and oranges, the rug and floor directly under the couch is in a purple color, indicating the surface temperature of those areas is much cooler than the rest of the room.

However, this insulation is problematic in itself, as the basement-view picture shows.

This time, we're looking at the same area of the living room, but looking upward at the corresponding area in the basement. The areas that were in yellow in the thermographic image are covered in moisture barrier; the area under the couch, however, has no such insulation. It is simply bare wooden subflooring.

Although typical for that time period, the unfinished basement insulation moisture barrier placement is not typical in today’s best building practices. It creates the potential to trap moisture, which can deteriorate the wood and create an environment conducive to fungal growth and wood-destroying insect infestation. Again, it’s easy to see the difference in environments when you look at the thermal image.?
