Thermal Barrier Coatings, Communication and Scientific Creativity
Surface Ventures
Not-for-profit providing world-class surface science webinars for academics and industry professionals
Hello all,
Hope you're well. Any online project such as ours only survives if it can find an audience. From our first event, I was glad that our webinars quickly found their core audience of like-minded researchers and industry professionals. I just wanted to say to all of you who regularly tune in to our webinars, share with your colleagues and support what we do; thank you! We've strived to create a community based on education and sharing knowledge and it's great to see it continue to grow. LinkedIn has been a fantastic platform to connect with other professionals but we're always trying to reach more people. To that end, we've created a profile on X (formerly Twitter), if you use that platform or know anyone who does, please give us a follow or tell your friends and colleagues. All the best for the next two weeks!
Research highlights: Highly Cited
Multi-technique coating analysis provides rich datasets allowing for the correlation of microstructure to other properties. Thermal barrier coatings are an area with much research interest with the continued pursuit of higher performance to drive more efficient aerospace engines at higher temperatures. Shen et al.'s LaGdZrO/YSZ thermal barrier coatings by EB-PVD: Microstructure, thermal properties and failure mechanism is an excellent study showing the performance of such coatings under some of the most challenging operating conditions for a surface-engineered component.
Science Resources: Communication
The process of research is incomplete without being able to properly communicate findings to others. Reaching your peers and telling the story of your research is no easy task. Effective Science Communication by Sam Illingworth and Grant Allen explores various aspects of communication from publishing in peer-reviewed journals to engaging with media and offers a blend of theoretical insights and practical exercises to increase confidence and competence.
Interesting Infographics
We all have the same amount of time in a day but there are marked differences in the average amount of time devoted to paid work, sleep and personal time throughout the glove. Exploring these key patterns can inform on how the differences in activities affects people's well-being. Explore more about this infographic from Our World in Data.

Notable and quotable
“The ideal engineer is a composite… He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.” – N. W. Dougherty
What we’re reading
There's a misconception that scientists and engineers aren't the most creative people but this couldn't be further from the truth. Creativity for science and engineering should be encouraged so that students learn to embrace and explore their ideas and so that a team's creativity flourishes. Creativity for Scientists and Engineers: A Practical Guide by Dennis Sherwood is the perfect text to explore these topics presenting pragmatic and powerful processes to generate ideas and distinguish good from bad.
An app a day
My e-reader is one of my favourite pieces of technology. Having a screen that can mimic paper and being able to store more books than I could ever read within a reasonable amount of time is incredible. I like having an Android-based e-reader giving flexibility to install multiple bookstores like Kindle or Kobo. But what if you do read on multiple devices, PocketBook Reader is the answer as it synchronises progress between devices, supports multiple book formats and even has its own store.
