There's no time to take time off!

There's no time to take time off!

If you're like me, and get antsy, or caught up in getting everything wrapped up, and have a hard time unplugging - this is for you. If not, hats off to you, whether you're wired that way or you've overcome it on your own.

It's a blessing and a curse, and very much the reason I've had success in the past.

If you're struggling to unplug - kinda like I was earlier today while at the amusement park with my kids, here are a few tips that have helped me with my "Recovery".

  • Have a master list. Keep a list of all your priorities, tasks, and anything you might get caught up thinking about. It needs to "live" somewhere. My stuff lives in Trello, but there are plenty of tools that can offer you a digital, take it anywhere solution.
  • Refer to master list regularly. I revisit my priorities every Friday afternoon. It's during that weekly planning session that I review everything that's in my world, and decide where I'm going to focus the next week.
  • Realize everything dies:) I mean, it's really hard to find evidence of anything from even a few hundred years ago. Most businesses are gone, people are gone, stories are faded away. It's likely that what you're fretting about while spending time with loved ones won't matter all that much in the fullness of time. This helps me have another reason to be "Present"

There are other things that could make it onto this list like Batching your time, or limiting distractions, turning off notifications and such, but that's likely another topic completely.

I've realized that one of my main goals as someone with an overactive mind is to be deliberate in where I spend my time, and do whatever I can to be in the moment. If I do these two things, I find I feel more joy.

Good luck out there! and let me know what I missed.

Great article! I struggle with unplugging, but since its games I design, its not so bad! I am always working through design ideas and roadblocks, even while I'm driving. To me that's unplugging a bit, just because I'm away from the computer and allowing my brain to reset from it.
