There’s No Straight Line in Marketing, According to Consultant Alessio Pieroni

How does an Italian guy who barely spoke English become the VP for Marketing of one of the most advanced human transformation platforms on the planet? For Alessio Pieroni, it took a lot of unconventional yet empowered decisions, and the courage to know when to take the leap.

In the Ambitious Tribe podcast, Pieroni told me he wasn’t even interested in marketing at first. He studied economics at university, worked for an NGO for a couple of years, then started traveling as a journalist. Exploration just seemed the most intuitive thing to do. “We are taught that it makes sense to stay in a job for two to three years because it will look better in your CV,” he said. “But if you’re not happy, then move, right. It’s as simple as that.”

He considers himself lucky to find what he liked along the way; so much so that he moved to the other side of the world to pursue his newfound passion for marketing.?

“The magic happens just outside of your comfort zone,” Pieroni said. “Try things, figure out what you like, and if you find it, go deep.”

Mindvalley, which crafts impactful, beautifully made learning experiences geared towards human transformation, was Pieroni’s dream company. He entered with the lowest position, brimming with excitement. “This is definitely my thing,” he remembered telling himself.

It must have been a difficult decision, then, to leave the company. “[But] I wanted to start something of my own,” he explained. “I wanted to search for people that I know have a fantastic mission. That have a great message and they can go out there and actually have an impact, which is something online education does.”

Pieroni now works with online education businesses, helping them scale from seven to eight figures. He has generated more than $100 million in revenue from companies he has consulted with, from Mindvalley to Apple.

I got to ask Pieroni some questions about what he does and why he does it so effectively. Here are some of my takeaways from our conversation, which you can listen to in my podcast.

There’s no straight line in marketing.

Pieroni advised, “There’s no one prescription in terms of monetizing. It’s your own way on how to do things.” Perhaps you will strike gold by straying from the conventional path, like Pieroni.

There’s power in restraint.

It’s important, according to Pieroni, to figure out exactly what platform you can utilize to deliver your message—and equally important to recognize that you don’t have to milk every single platform that garners attention in the zeitgeist. Otherwise, you risk directing your energy on spaces that your audience doesn’t even frequent.?

Begin with ‘why.’

Then ask yourself: What are you in the platform for? Are you there to sell, or to develop your brand? This helps you determine what metric is most effective to use, and of course different objectives necessitate different strategies. By starting with ‘why,’ you pull into focus the core of the work you do. You center your purpose, allowing you to more easily magentize people aligned with this purpose.

Don’t let FOMO rule over you.

“If you post on social media because of FOMO rather than a genuine desire to contribute, people will know,” Pieroni warned. “And you will burn out because nothing is working.” After all, when you’re an online educator, your social media presence is your first impression. If trust and credibility are foundations of your business, it only makes sense to use these principles to guide you in perhaps the most public-facing aspect of your work.
