There's proof in the painting....

Purchasing a professional paint booth for our shop is one of the best tools we've invested as a company. The controlled environment helps ensure consistent quality, protects against contaminants, and meets safety standards. However, maintaining such a setup comes with its own set of challenges.

One of the primary issues is the high cost of installation and upkeep. A professional paint booth requires a significant initial investment, and ongoing maintenance to keep it running efficiently. This includes regular filter changes, ventilation checks, and compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Failure to maintain these standards can lead to costly fines or even operational shutdowns. Painting also uses more consumables than any other phase of fabrication. Mixing cups, cleaning solutions, lids, gloves, Tyvek suits, and respirator filters are just some of the items we go through on a weekly basis - not to mention the paint itself. These costs can quickly add up, and if you're not prepared, they can definitely catch you off guard.

Temperature and humidity control is another hurdle. Paint booths need precise climate control to ensure optimal paint application. High humidity can cause paint defects, while fluctuating temperatures can alter paint viscosity, paint life, and affect the finish quality. Installing and maintaining the necessary HVAC systems to regulate these conditions adds to the complexity and cost.

While some of these challenges may seem overwhelming at first, we've came up with a few tips and tricks over the years that help us keep costs down and production going.

1) Prepping (and not for doomsday): One of the lesser-known truths about painting is that it's predominantly about preparation. The actual spraying of the paint is the quickest part of the process. A well-prepped surface means the difference between a mediocre job and a professional finish. At our shop we will do most of our prepping like sanding or masking immediately after fabrication. However, when it comes to the cleaning process we hold off until the project is ready to enter the booth. It may be tempting to fully prep multiple projects but unless you have a clean room the surface will collect debris very quickly.

2) Temperature - Temperature and humidity must be carefully monitored and controlled. High humidity can cause paint to dry too slowly, leading to defects like runs and sags. Conversely, low humidity can cause the paint to dry too quickly, resulting in an uneven finish. Temperature fluctuations can also impact the viscosity of the paint, affecting its application and finish.

3) Planning - Proper planning is essential when it comes to painting. You might not realize it, but saying "just paint this real quick" is like saying "just weld this car frame together real quick." Prepping is tedious and time-consuming, so it’s crucial to schedule when jobs come in and out of the paint booth carefully. Additionally, once a job has been sprayed, it needs time to cure. Unless you have a warehouse-sized paint booth, you can probably only handle two jobs at a time. These jobs must sit overnight to cure before they can be handled again. If you don't plan accordingly paint can be a huge bottleneck.

4) Technology - Our paint system features an advanced paint manager program that assists us in mixing formulas and tracking inventory. It even alerts our painter when supplies are running low. This has been super helpful as when things get busy it's easy to forget you have to buy more white paint (which is used in almost everything). We integrated this program this year and have only just begun to explore its full capabilities, but it’s already proven to be remarkably sophisticated for what you'd expect in paint software.

5) Maintenance - It can be very tempting to skip routine maintenance and keep plugging away...but don't. Change your filters, clean your guns, clean your vents. and then change your filters again. Paint can easily clog up the inner workings of the spray gun. Every evening our painting cleans the guns and leaves the tips to soak over night.

Despite these challenges, the benefits of having a professional paint booth outweigh the troubles. It ensures high-quality finishes, increases efficiency, and enhances safety for both our painter and the environment.
