There's No Place Like Home

With the buzz surrounding the new Wicked movie, I’ve been reminiscing about Dorothy’s famous line from the original Wizard of Oz: “There’s no place like home.” That iconic film reminded us all of the truth in those words. I feel it every time I drive through the gate of our ranch or when I’m flying into Austin and first spot the Capitol and the University of Texas Tower on the horizon. It’s that feeling of belonging. The comfort of friendships tried and true. The familiarity of home.

Whether you’re staying home for the holidays, returning to a familiar place, or exploring new places of interest, I hope you feel grounded in who you are. Like Dorothy, who longed to leave her home to explore the intrigue and adventure of Oz, you may also find a desire to explore someplace new—or perhaps, learn something new.

For me, the most fascinating part of Dorothy’s journey is when Glinda, the Good Witch, reveals that Dorothy had the power to go home all along. In my book, Cowgirl Power, I say that we all possess the personal power within us to accomplish anything we dream of. Building personal power not only helps us accomplish our goals but also increases our options in life. I want you to have many wonderful choices at every stage of your journey.

Painting the skies and land of our ranch is a constant reminder of what home means to me. Truly, there’s no place like it!

I’ll leave you with a whimsical yet meaningful quote from my dad: “Wherever you travel, wherever you go, keep your eye upon the donut, and not upon the hole.” Like many of his sayings, it carries a deeper wisdom: Keep your focus on what truly matters in life, no matter where you call home.
