When it comes to fleshing out your understanding of your various interests, here's a little thought-exercise you can use.
To illustrate, let's say you are interested in the game of chess. However, you may not be aware that you enjoy chess because it gives you the opportunity to be intellectually strategic and competitive without punishing your body, and it allows you to travel to events and enjoy the company and camaraderie of like-minded people.
Discovering these embedded interests is what I call interest mapping. You start with something that you enjoy doing, and then you unpack it. This can help you better understand the things you're truly interested in that have you gravitate to the activities you enjoy.
The above illustration resulted in becoming aware of underlying interests in strategy, competition, travel, and the importance of sharing experiences with like-minded people. Now, you can take note of these things and begin to look for other environments or activities where you could find and exercise those same underlying interests and preferences.
Understanding your underlying interests and preferences in this way helps you reframe how you look at the world of work. It will equip you to better understand where you can find work that you can love outside of the traditional environments and activities you’re familiar with. That can open up a lot of potential for your career development.
Try it. Let me know how it works for you in the comments below.
