There's life in the old dogs yet!

I keep hearing lots of great things about recruiting through social media: “It’s the now and the future”, “It’s the only way to attract millenials”, “Job boards are dead”! The list goes on and I believe fully in the capability and need for great social engagement and attraction activity when you’re hiring AND when you’re not.  I’m a fan of social hiring.

But let’s remember and embrace the old dogs of hiring. The Job Boards, The Bill Boards, Word of Mouth Referrals, Talent Pools of other genre’s (CV databases, ATS’s etc).  It’s another list that can go on and on.

NONE OF THESE ARE DEAD… these old dogs are just less attractive when a new puppy is introduced, but ignoring them is a mistake.

Everybody loves a new puppy and its quirky new ways of interacting with the world, and it’s guaranteed to get you some attention and attract people to you wherever you take it. But don’t forget the skills, tricks and people attraction capability an old dog still holds alongside its ease of handling with less risk.

Job boards and other collections of advertising and talent groups are still essential; you need to find the best mix of tools for your needs.

Don’t exclude a whole range of potential brilliance just because they "don’t do social".

Just a FYI: the picture is of Muttley and Rosie. They're cousins. Muttley is old and faithful and still attractive to any audience. Rosie is the puppy; by default more attractive, but she wees everywhere and jumps on you and still nips the odd hand… bit of a handful, so very much like the ‘modern’, attractive but sometimes risky business of hiring through social channels!

Great article. As much as it's important to keep up with the times, it's easy to get lost in amongst all of the new digital ways of hiring. The old dogs will always hold their place in the recruitment world.

Great post Andrew! I absolutely agree with you - we have a huge (and warranted) focus on digital - but I am always the first in the room to make sure people remember what I like to call 'local' approaches - be it the good old billboard or even something more innovative like printing sandwich bags for a local cafe where your competitor's skilled workers often go for lunch! Not everyone has embraced technology, and millennials aren't the only people we want to employ.
