Human of Tower Hamlets: Gary
"I busk most Sundays on Columbia Road. You’ll find me here with my cello, singing and beatboxing. I made the leap from Manchester to London because I really felt like there was something more happening here. And the East End? It’s got this vibe that just connects with me, you know? I’ve been learning about its history, and it’s incredible to think about all the immigrants who’ve made their mark here.
Brick Lane? Oh man, it reminds me so much of growing up in New Orleans. The art, the music — it’s like a piece of home. My dad was my biggest influence when it comes to music. New Orleans is a music city, and I carry a bit of that spirit with me everywhere I go. For me, music is just a by-product of life; it’s a beautiful way to express what you’re feeling.
What strikes me about East London is how many of us came here for a shot at a better life. Some are from the poorest backgrounds, yet this place has sparked so many bold ideas. There’s this culture of sharing resources, working together; that means a lot to me. It feels like community is still alive here.
Sure, times have changed, but that sense of togetherness? It’s still there. I love that I can play my music on the street and, in my own way, be part of the story."
