Therapeutic Alliance

Therapeutic Alliance

At Rutgers MSW program, I was recently teaching and discussing ways to develop a Therapeutic alliance with adult clients as they begin treatment. Winnicot and other experts compare the relationship between therapist and client to the relationship between a parent and their child. They describe this relationship in terms of safety, trust, and respect. Just as the parent is non-judgmental, consistently available, and caring, so is the therapist. This is a profound and straightforward concept to keep in mind as clinicians meet their new clients and focus on building rapport with them.
