Theranos's Elizabeth Holmes goes from hero to (literally) zero; India surges past the U.S. in internet users; and more news
Elizabeth Holmes has been marked down: Last year the Theranos founder topped Forbes' list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women at $4.5 billion. In what must be a record for reversal of fortune, Forbes says she is now worth absolutely nothing. It's simple math: Theranos — implied valuation $9 billion — has been through the wringer and is, Forbes says, essentially worth no more than the cash investors put in, about $800 million. Holmes' net worth is essentially in Theranos, and she'd be among the last in line to cash out. So that leaves her at whatever is the opposite of ka-ching.
Uber's last funding round included the largest investment from a single investor: $3.5 billion from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. That round, last December, established an implied valuation of $62.5 billion, cementing Uber as the largest unicorn by far. At the time reporting was that Uber was seeking to raise far less — $2.1 billion. No current investors cashed out. Which makes it sound an awful lot like the Saudi fund got a nice stake.
India has passed the United States to become the second-largest internet country in the world (China remains #1), Kleiner Perkins partner Mary Meeker disclosed at the Code Conference. Global internet growth was flat except for India, where it is still accelerating and grew 40%. Read Meeker's annual report, which makes or breaks tech companies.

AirBnB's three co-founders signed the Giving Pledge, a promise to give away at least half of their wealth in their lifetimes or in wills. They are among youngest to join the now 154-member group, established by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, and "the only representatives of the tech unicorn economy to join the ranks this year," reports Fortune. Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, and his wife, Elizabeth Blecharczyk, also taking the pledge, are said to each have a net worth of $3.3 billion.
Insider trading for indoor plumbing: A former director of Barclay's bank was arrested for an insider trading scheme that got him — in part — free plumbing work on his home. The allegations are that banker Steven McClatchey fed plumber Gary Pusey tips, Pusey made trades, they split thousands of dollars "stuffed in a gym bag brought to a marina where they both had pleasure boats" or elsewhere. And sometimes Pusey just comped the banker with some work around the house.
