Research highlights packaging's crucial role in European coffee consumer decisions

Amcor 's research reveals that European coffee consumers heavily base their purchasing decisions on packaging, emphasising the importance of brand trust, convenience, and sustainability.

  • Nearly 70% of European coffee consumers have selected products solely based on packaging, which is particularly important for 18-34-year-olds.
  • 70% of respondents consider brand trust ‘very important’ in their purchasing decisions, highlighting the significance of packaging in fostering this trust.
  • 52% of UK respondents rate the 'premium aspect' of coffee packaging as ‘very important,’ emphasizing country-specific preferences.
  • 50% of respondents view convenience as crucial, with 33% unwilling to repurchase if packaging isn't easy to use; 'easy to open and reclose' is a highly appealing feature.
  • 44% of consumers affirm that sustainable packaging positively influences repurchasing decisions, with 73% of UK respondents prioritizing recyclability as the most important claim.

Survey highlights consumer demand for sustainable packaging and greater brand responsibility

A CleanHub survey reveals that while many US participants are willing to pay extra for sustainable packaging, many are constrained by cost, and the majority believe brands should do more to tackle plastic pollution.

  • Nearly 50% of survey participants are willing to pay extra for sustainable packaging, but many feel limited by cost.
  • 87% of respondents recycle at home, yet 75% want the government to make recycling more accessible.
  • Despite being more sustainably aware, 71% of people aged 18-29 struggle to shop sustainably due to the cost-of-living crisis.
  • 79% of respondents believe brands should do more to tackle plastic pollution, with only 20% thinking brands do enough.

Survey reveals strong public support for UK's deposit return schemes

A survey conducted by TOMRA and The Diffley Partnership , in collaboration with Survation Ltd , reveals strong public support for the UK's deposit return schemes (DRSs), highlighting widespread environmental concerns and the desire for effective waste management solutions.

  • An estimated 31 billion single-use drink containers are purchased annually in the UK, including 12 billion plastic bottles, 14 billion cans, and 5 billion glass bottles.
  • Collection rates for these containers currently range between 70% to 75%
  • 75% of respondents support the introduction of deposit return schemes (DRS).
  • Nine out of 10 individuals said that they would use a DRS to return empty beverage containers.
  • 60% of respondents believe a unified, nationwide DRS would be the most effective approach
