Theory of Constraints Framework

Theory of Constraints Framework

In?project management, the theory of constraints (TOC) is a?problem-solving methodology framework to help you identify the most important limiting factor standing in the way of your project objectives and goals.

When to use this framework

You could use the theory of constraints to identify the biggest blocker to your projects. Then, by using the five focusing steps, you can “break” that constraint so it no longer negatively impacts your project outcomes

Who is this framework for?

Organisations looking to resolve the weakest link to strengthen their entire project.

Why do you need this framework?

You need TOC for complex or mission-critical objectives and goals in a project. For instance, empower a team to improve while only using what they already have.

How do you use this framework?

The five focusing steps can help you identify and address a constraint. This is the most basic and straightforward way to use the theory of constraints

  1. Identify the constraint: Identify the problem that is blocking your progress to completing the project. These problems can be internal factors (lack of training..) or external factors (lack of talent or resources..).
  2. Exploit the constraint: Make quick improvements to the throughput of the constraint using existing resources (i.e., make the most of what you have).
  3. Subordinate the constraint: The parts of the process that are not constraints need to align with and support the constraint.
  4. Elevate the constraint: If the constraint still exists (i.e., it has not moved), consider what actions can be taken to eliminate it from being the constraint. (Maybe you need more people or investment for it to be removed)
  5. Repeat the process: The Five Focusing Steps are a continuous improvement cycle. Therefore, once a constraint is resolved the next constraint should immediately be addressed. Don’t be complacent.

The Theory of Constraints is a great way to reduce your risks on your existing projects. You can continuously look to evolve your projects and get the highest impact with this framework.?

Love the framework reminders Tim Cakir. So very useful to have on standby for whenever you need them

TOC is nice. It's simple but massively effective when managers or founders come across complex projects. This should help unlock the roadblocks and help teams in understanding what needs to be executed.
