We all have read about the benefits of meditation however little focus has been given to exploring the reason why it's beneficial. For easy consumption, I am listing some points to drive home the message. Following are some facts that help us clear some basic concepts
1) We or our brain is not the author of thoughts, emotions, or moods that arise in consciousness, in fact, we have little control over our next thought or emotion.
2) Mistake most of us make is that we think we author thoughts and so feel the need to identify with it, so an angry thought makes us angry and a sad one makes us sad.
3) So the challenge is not to identify with thoughts and emotions since we never authored them in the first place. Once we have mastered this art we will seldom get angry, jealous, insecure, anxious, etc.
So how do we master the art of non-identification with thought? This requires regular meditation practice, there is no other way. Any degree of mastery over non-identification with thoughts and emotions can improve our lives in many profound ways, it makes us less irritable, less angry, more compassionate, and more patient and this results in financial gains, and emotional and health gains. We also improve our relationships with our loved ones in leaps and bounds, and our professional relationships also improve leading to a more peaceful existence. We all know once peace is established prosperity follows. All in all Meditation in many ways is both a selfish act as well as a selfless one.
Some people mistake listening to music or trekking a mountain as meditation, nothing can be further from the truth, initially, everyone has to sit down and meditate, and eventually, after practice one can feel that the experience extends itself to other areas like listening to music or trekking or indeed during washing utensils.
