The Theory of 5: What It Is and How to Use It

It All Starts with You
If you’re reading this, you’ve already won the lottery of Life.
Consider the odds of your mother and father finding each other in this world. Consider the odds of them conceiving the person who would become the unique genetic “YOU.”
Trillions to one.
And yet, here you are.
So, what are you going to do with this amazing opportunity?
You owe it to everyone — your family, friends, co-workers, community and yourself — to make the most of this existence you’ve been given.
One of the few absolute truths in life is that none of us know how long we will live. Do we have decades? Years? Months? Minutes? The fact that time can never be replaced or reused is another truth.
Most of us strive to live a life with no regrets and to make a mark on the world. To do this, we must become our best selves. We must make the most of the limited time we’re given and do something extraordinary.
To be remembered past our lifetimes and leave a legacy — for our family, friends, community and society — takes more than what many are willing to do.
Those who wait — who hope — without acting aren’t remembered. We remember those who positively impact people, who change lives, who accomplish, who create, who change the world.
So, how do you become the best version of yourself? How do you become someone who matters?
No matter how much raw talent and potential you start out with, you’ve got to put in the work daily, weekly, monthly, for many years to hone everything you are into everything you can become.
And here’s the secret: It’s next to impossible to do it alone.
The “Self-Made” Man
The myth of the “self-made” man or woman is just that — a myth.
We hold in awe those who started life without the benefit of money or resources and built empires. It’s as if they were destined to be giants and got there with only their own determination and talents.
When you look closer, though, behind the myth and their “destiny,” you’ll start to see the people around them. You’ll see family and friends who encouraged them. You’ll find teachers who instructed them to use their gifts. You’ll see trusted mentors who coached them and got the best out of them. You will also find people who did not believe in them therefore challenging and or inspiring them because they wanted to prove these people wrong.
In this world, we are never alone.
No matter what God-given abilities a person is blessed to possess, we need others to help shape us, sharpen us and guide us through life. Sure, you may find some level of success on your own, but you’ll never achieve your true potential and become your best self without assistance, support, counsel or guidance.
This support may come from our parents, family, teachers, friends, co-workers, leaders and other role models. Wherever it comes from, the results are the same. We grow, we get stronger, we learn and we become more than who we were. Even negative experiences with difficult people are learning moments; we learn what not to be.
In the best cases, these people don’t tell us what to think, but how to think. They model ways we can attain our best lives possible through their actions, behaviors, support and guidance. They challenge us to achieve results we didn’t think possible.
So, where can you find these role models? Where do you find true mentors?
