TheMagic5 Swim Goggles Review: World's First Custom Swimming Goggles!

Swim goggles have evolved mightily in recent years, with heads-up displays and now custom lens designs. Here is an in-the-water look at TheMagic5 Swim Goggles.

Swim goggles are one of the most essential pieces of swim gear required to have a good workout in the water. They keep water out of your eyes. Help you time those turns and finishes like a pro. Read the pace clock. And so on.

But at some point, every swimmer has struggled with ill-fitting goggles that leak or fog up.

That’s where the Magic5 swim goggles come in, solving the primary pain point of every swimmer who has ever laced up a set of goggles: finding that comfy, leak-free fit that allows swimmers to focus on performance instead of emptying water from their goggle lenses.

Using a smartphone app that scans the dimensions of your face, TheMagic5 goggles are manufactured specifically to the contours of your face, ensuring a comfortable and watertight seal that won’t distract you from your swim.

Not only that, but they are also made from high-quality materials and designed with advanced features like anti-fog and UV protection.

In this review, we’ll look closer at TheMagic5 swim goggles and see if they truly live up to their promise of being the ultimate swimming companion.

Let’s dive in.

The classic mirrored lens on TheMagic5. The diamond-shaped lens creates excellent peripheral vision, too.

Magic5 Swim Goggles – the Pros

Having used a few different sets of the Magic5 Swim Goggles over the past few months, here are the things that really stuck out about the goggles.

Customized fit for my face.

Let’s start off with the big benefit of TheMagic5 goggles?—they are custom-fit to the shape of my face.

This is how it works: after you order the goggles on Magic5’s website, you download an app that takes a 3D scan of your face.

Once completed—make sure you read the instructions for how to do the face scan using your particular smartphone as instructions differ based on model—the scan is uploaded to Magic5.

From there, a set of goggles is 3D printed, matching the exact specifications and sizing from the face scan. A week or two later, boom—a fresh set of individually tailored swim goggles arrive.

Pretty cool!

Lots of tint and lenses for indoor/outdoor swimming.

They don’t need to be worn super tight

One of the ways swimmers usually deal with leaky swim goggles is to tighten the head straps to the point that the goggles are choking the top of the head like a pimple about to burst.

This is obviously not an ideal situation—super tight goggles lead to headaches, discomfort, and with enough time in the water, leave those bright racoon eyes on your face for hours after you’ve left the pool.

Because the Magic5 swim goggles are custom-fit, they don’t need to be worn overly tight. They “sit” relatively lightly on your face, making them exceptionally comfortable.

This is great news for open water and distance swimmers, who put in the hours and the miles in the water and want goggles that aren’t putting tons of pressure on the face.

Antifog protection

The Magic 5 swim goggles have an anti-fog coating on their lenses, which prevents condensation from forming and fogging up the goggles during use.

This coating helps swimmers maintain clear visibility while swimming, reducing the need to constantly stop and adjust the goggles.

The anti-fog properties of the Magic 5 goggles are a result of their high-quality materials and attention to detail in their design, making them a reliable and practical option for swimmers of all levels.

TheMagic5 swim goggles look great

I know that function is more important than aesthetics, but the Magic5 Swim Goggles are a slick set of goggles.

The mirrored tint, the one I initially chose with my first pair, look badass in the water while also doing all of the basics that we expect from our swim goggles, including excellent peripheral vision and comfort.

Additionally, because they come in a wide range of colors and tints, from mirrored to clear, you can chose the one that best suits your? style and personality.

In the case of the Magic5 Swim Goggles, you get the best of function and style in one set of goggles.

Magic5 Swim Goggles – The Cons

While I absolutely love these swim goggles, they aren’t for everyone.

The only real drawback of these swim goggles is…

The price.

For the very casual swimmer, TheMagic5 Swim Goggles will be too much money. There are far cheaper swim goggles on the market for the person who only goes to the pool once or twice a month for a handful of laps. Vanquishers, Sporti S2’s, and especially Swedish goggles, all retail for less than $20ish buckeroos.

The Magic5 Swim Goggles cost anywhere from $65 to $90 depending on the tint and color you choose (you can save some money when buying in bulk, however).

But for the swimmer who is in the water regularly, and requires a comfortable and leak-free fit, the Magic5 Swim Goggles are a no-brainer.

How often do I need to replace the Magic5 Swim Goggles?

Because the goggles are made with a sturdy polycarbonate lens and silicone head straps, the goggles will last a long time.

The main thing you will need to focus on to extend the life of TheMagic5 swim goggles is the anti-fog coating in the lens which will fade over time.

You can address this by regularly applying an anti-fog spray for swim goggles (Magic5 offers their own spray, as well) to keep the anti-fog working properly.

How long does it take to do a face scan for the Magic5 swim goggles?

It took me about five minutes to do the face scan using the smartphone app.

After you’ve downloaded the app, and fire it up, you simply move the camera on your phone around your face slowly, capturing the measurements of the eye socket, nose and cheeks.

As mentioned earlier, double-check the instructions for your particular device, as the face scanning happens in different ways depending on the model of your smartphone.

Do the Magic5 swim goggles come in different colors or designs?

TheMagic5 releases new colors and tints frequently. Whereas they started with the mirrored tint goggle, they have since expanded to a long list of colors and designs, including some limited-edition runs of colors and tints.

What do the Magic5 swim goggles come with?

Each set of Magic5 Swim Goggles comes with a swim goggle case. This is great news for swimmers who maybe aren’t as careful with their swim goggles as they could be between swim workouts (which is, I would dare to say, almost all of us).

The case is vented, so it can evacuate moisture and water while sitting in the depths of your swim bag. The goggle case will also help reduce the scratches and dirt that can accumulate while the goggles get jostled around in your swim bag.

TheMagic5 goggles are a little pricier than your standard Vanquisher and especially compared to old-school classic Swedes, but the goggle case helps ensure that you get a few more laps from your goggles.

Are these the swim goggles that were on Shark Tank?

Yes. The Magic5 co-founders Rasmus Barfred and Bo Haaber appeared on Shark Tank in season 13. They ended up securing a $1,000,000 deal with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Canadian entrepreneur Robert Herjavec.

Wrapping Things Up

Overall, these goggles are a really unique and innovative product that offers customized fit and advanced features for swimmers, taking swim goggle fit and performance to a new level.

While potentially more expensive than traditional goggles, the custom-fitting process ensures a comfortable and watertight seal that won’t leak or cause discomfort.

The goggles are made from high-quality materials and designed with advanced features like anti-fog and UV protection, enhancing the swimming experience and protecting the eyes from harmful rays.

Although there are some potential cons to consider, the benefits of TheMagic5 swim goggles make them a worthwhile investment for serious swimmers or anyone looking for a more comfortable and practical swimming experience.
