“Even in a free society democracy only guarantees right of speech, it’s upon you to earn the right to be heard”.

John Maxwell in the #5LevelsofLeadership – clearly outlines where our leaders in the society over the years have failed across all spheres whether in social, politics or corporate leadership.

THE LAW OF RESPECT.

At Level 5, a Leader having gone through all the Levels from Position, Permission, Production, People Development to Pinnacle, People don’t just follow orders because you are their Leader or just because you have a good track record, they follow you because of who you are as person and what you stand for – “Respect” most leaders are stuck at position, with a boss mindset, the elephant question is, does the orders guarantee intended results and if they do in long-term has continuity been overlooked, just an afterthought have you ever as a person placed an order only to receive a wrong order yet you keyed in the right details, personally I have, the experience isn’t pleasant but it happens and what follows is a poor review ++ a note of how incompetent the person was.(difference between right of speech and earning right to be heard).

SUCCESSION.

Why are we having Co. fail within 10-20 yrs of inception especially family owned business?? can it be attributed to lack of succession plan, even in a family setup how young is too young, when does the father start having the conversation of who steps up and take the Leadership role, and when is it the right time to handover the baton???, is it when the momentum is high or when time and circumstances dictates??.

Are we demanding more than the successor can offer?? Or are we even giving Leadership roles to people who aren’t mentored or don’t have enough to take up those positions, Developing people is not only mentorship but as well evaluating the potential of the person to the task, if I’m going to the market to get some Lemon and I find myself heading to an orange market then, it’s either 1 – my priority have changed or 2 – me as person I don’t know what I’m looking for. (difference between what you actually need and what you got)

LEGACY.

Doing what no else can do, more opportunities at the top, moving other leaders to create space for other leaders, at Level 5 a leader is looking to doing more to others than to him/herself. Asking yourself of what more??, me thinking if I can prepare a better stew than my wife and I decide to do it more often does it come out as a sign of weakness or it’s me being a better husband to my family (Legacy)

Leadership is hard work. Not the hard work of doing the job—it’s the hard work of learning to let go.
