Theatre not so dark ... keeping a beacon of hope through difficult times.

I have had strong connections with theatre throughout my life whether acting, singing, directing or writing, so to watch theatres across the nation ‘going dark’ this week in a way never seen before is difficult for me as well as many of my friends and contacts. Clearly in the current situation this is absolutely the right response but poignant nonetheless less alongside the other stories and tradegies unfolding whether around lives or livelihoods.
For me there is also something symbolic about the transformation of places which are normally so full of colour and life. The solatary lanterns left shining out on stages contrasting with the endless darkness of silent auditoriums represent a beacon of hope. Not just for the reopening of the venues, but for the light on which we should focus to get us though the wider crisis over the next few days, weeks and months.
For the ‘professionals’ I know (ie those of you who make your living from the arts), most of you will be self employed and I hope you get clarity soon on support available to help you make ends meet. In the meantime use those wonderful creative juices to find new ways to entertain and hone the art and excellence in what you do when you return. For those who do theatre as a pastime, I am so sorry for all of you who have had to cancel or postpone the shows you have worked tirelessly on for the last few months. I hope your societies can weather the storm an come back stronger to give joy to the loyal audiences you serve.
But whether you are ‘professional’ or ‘amateur’ you will have this in common….
Theatre is so much more than how we make our living or how we spend out spare time. It’s our passion, how we define ourselves and challenge ourselves to be our best and push our creativity to new limits, it’s the best example of team working, a family who are united in coming together to make something beautiful; something that makes us think or cry or laugh. And above all else, something which makes us feel alive.
Whether in theatre or not, keep that beacon of light burning, keep the hopes and dreams alive and come back in better times to help the nation thrive again.
