The Theater of Brand - Brandy Podcast (Ep 14)

Did you know your brand is on stage?

Your brand is not only on stage, but performs in front of your audience every day.

Like any successful theater performance, your brand has a story it is conveying to the audience and it even needs a script.

This is precisely, why Disneyland has a "You are now entering the stage" sign for their cast members(employees) to see as they enter public areas from their break areas. These framing of theater now only brings clarity to your business, but improves your brand experience. On this round of Brandy, we outline the three cornerstones of a successful brand experience through the lens of theater.

After reading Joe Pine's amazing book "The Experience Economy" I felt the urge to adapt his insightful view on the economy to the world of brand. This lens not only makes the nuances of business make more sense, but adds a great deal of depth and application to the very abstract world of brand.

This episode of Brandy is a cocktail of:

  • The story and drama of your brand — think of this like your brand strategy and unique position in the market. What's the crux of your story that not only sets you apart but makes your performance relevant to your target audience. This focuses on the WHY of your brand.
  • The scripting of your brand — your script determines HOW your story is to be conveyed. A script gives direction and sets the parameters for how things happen and the rules by which your performance plays by. This also sets the tone and style of your business and its genre.
  • The theater and performance of your brand — this is the context of your brand. The context of WHEN/WHERE your brand exists. This envelopes the venue, stage, lighting, seating, etc. of your performance.
  • How your audience engages with your brand — depending on the type of performance and variables, different audiences will engage with different performers well.... differently. We'll discuss this on this episode of Brandy.
  • What Freshpet and Las Vegas have in common — we talk about how these brands use theater to portray very different performances and offerings.
  • The theater of Trader Joe's — we will explore and define the theater of the great Trader Joe's brand and how it helps them succeed.
