That's a Wrap!
Last week got a bit away from me as UMS assists in the technology and Zoom administration of Board of Trustees Committee meetings, Dinner, and Full Board meeting.
Here are some highlights of the last two weeks.
Media Services Assistant Director Jenna DeLisi hosted the Sexuality and Gender Alliance Employee Resource Group’s first event of the semester which was a welcome back lunch catered by Basil Tree Catering, an LGBT and Women Owned small business!
Next up Jonathan Wardle and our student employees worked in collaboration with the Center for International Education & Study Away (CIESA) to record videos for social media where we interviewed soon to be graduating seniors about their OPT (Optional Practical Training) application process in an effort to help other international students who will be applying for OBT in the coming months. This program allows students to work in the United States for up to 12 months while gaining real-world experience in their field of study.
University Media Services along with Giro Studio in Cambridge filmed and livestreamed a Ford Hall Forum from Suffolk University’s Modern Theatre with Arlie Russell Hochschild where she discussed her new book Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right.
Hochschild’s research drew her to Pikeville, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachia, within the whitest and second-poorest congressional district in the nation, where the city was reeling: coal jobs had left, crushing poverty persisted, and a deadly drug crisis struck the region.

In?Stolen Pride, Hochschild focuses on a group swept up in the shifting political landscape: blue-collar men. In small churches, hillside hollers, roadside diners, trailer parks, and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Hochschild introduces us to unforgettable people, and offers an original lens through which to see them and the wider world.
Next up, Jonathan Wardle and his STEP Students also recorded an interview by John Deliso with Bob Adams, the architect of Sargent Hall. This video was for the oral histories of the Moakley Archives and likely to be used in the 25th anniversary of the building sometime in the spring!
Matthew Dezii and Jeff Rhind participated in Empowering Campus Innovation: Effective Asset Management in Higher Education, a webinar with Michael Ballard and Steven Vest of Brigham and Young University - Idaho and Will Tapper of University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Hosted by Cheqroom's, Claire (Dolney) Strom and Amanda Trent, the panel discussed how the landscape of higher education technology has evolved in recent years, how a centralized asset management system like Cheqroom can improve management of high-value equipment and resources, and key considerations when implementing new technologies or systems across a large university campus.
To finish off the week, University Media Services provided video production, live captioning, and livestreaming for the State of Massachusetts Pro Bono awards at the Adams Court. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services annually presents awards to honor those in the legal profession who have demonstrated outstanding and exceptional commitment to providing unpaid legal services to those in need. Suffolk and UMS are always honored to assist the highest court in the State with production assistance.
And....we are on to November!
