That's a wrap on Climate Week!

That's a wrap on Climate Week!

Dear friends of carbon removal,

The largest annual climate event of its kind, Climate Week NYC, just concluded last week. And for the first time, Climeworks hosted its own series of events with the aim of amplifying the conversation about high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in NYC. Combined with two exciting new partnerships that we announced, we believe our mission succeeded. Thank you to all who joined us at the Swiss Institute and who we had the pleasure to connect with throughout the week!

Meeting the CDR industry up close in the East Village

On September 21, Climeworks transformed the Swiss Institute into a hub for carbon removal. After diving into 波士顿谘询公司 's latest report, “The Time for Carbon Removal Has Come ”, we had a frank exchange about the business case for carbon removal with top experts in the field:?Carbon180 , Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management | U.S. Department of Energy , 摩根大通 , the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the?WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development .?High-quality standards for carbon removal continue to be top of mind for buyers and continue to be pushed forward by Climeworks: we will work with Puro.earth to certify our CDR services.

We concluded the day with our CDR happy hour to celebrate our journey so far and to bring to life exciting next steps: as announced by our co-CEO and co-founder Christoph Gebald , Climeworks collaborates with Great Carbon Valley to start exploring the feasibility of direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) in Kenya. Take a look at our highlights of the Climeworks event series by clicking the button below or browse through the photos of the day .

Charting the path to large-scale DAC+S in Kenya

Together with Great Carbon Valley we aim to establish DAC+S projects in Kenya that are capable of removing up to one million tons of?CO? from the atmosphere, once fully deployed. Due to its?geological advantages and abundant low-carbon energy sources, Kenya's Great Rift Valley is a very promising location for large-scale DAC+S deployment. The collaboration with GCV will commence with exploring suitable locations, low-carbon energy sources, and safe and permanent mineralization storage. Both parties are committed to modeling and implementing the projects by leveraging local workforce and supply chains.

Christoph Gebald , Climeworks' co-founder and co-CEO, commented: “Kenya's unique qualities make it a forerunner for effective carbon dioxide removal through DAC+S. Partnering with Great Carbon Valley, we're exploring this high potential, combining our field experience to unlock a key contribution from Kenya to global decarbonization. Climeworks is set on being a pivotal player in this arena, both in Kenya and on the world stage.”

We're joining forces with Puro.earth to work toward certification

After developing the first full-chain methodology for DAC+S together with Carbfix and delivering CDR services that were third-party verified by DNV, Climeworks is taking the next step to advance high-quality CDR standards. Together with Puro.earth and Carbfix , we will work toward certification of our CDR services under the Puro Standard, which is the first standard for engineered CDR methods in the voluntary carbon market. Announced at the Puro.earth CDR Summit at Climate Week NYC, the collaboration is informed by two years of operational experience gained at Orca.

Christoph Beuttler , Chief Climate Policy Officer at Climeworks, commented: “This partnership between Puro, Carbfix and Climeworks is an important milestone, as it puts Climeworks on track to issue the world’s first independently verified, third-party certified, and ICROA-approved DAC+S carbon dioxide removal (CDR). We are best prepared to work within an externally developed standard after successfully implementing third-party verification of our CDR services with DNV in 2022. Moving to a CDR-specific, high-quality certification provider like Puro.earth marks the next logical step. We also believe this to be the right step to spearhead the development of a high-integrity DAC+S and CDR market and believe this move to be important for Climeworks and the industry as a whole.”

Insights from our latest carbon catch-up

How can companies ensure they build a balanced carbon removal portfolio that aligns with their net-zero aspirations? During our webinar on August 30, Katharine Hayhoe ( The Nature Conservancy ) and Brian DiMarino ( 摩根大通 ) shared their thoughts with us. Katharine delivered an inspiring introduction packed with helpful metaphors, which doubled down on the crucial notion that there are many silver buckshots in the fight against global warming - but no silver bullet. Brian shared his top pieces of advice for companies who want to get started on their carbon removal journey: understand where your emissions come from, set bold and measurable ambitions, define your criteria for the solutions you select, and, most importantly, start today.

We're proud to be a part of BBC StoryWorks' film series “Humanizing Energy”

Our new film “Climeworks: Removing CO? from the air” dives into Climeworks' history, technology, and scalable potential. Produced by BBC StoryWorks , the creative content division of BBC Studios , the film is part of a documentary-style series, called “Humanizing Energy”, which consists of 30 films showcasing innovations across the energy ecosystem.

Our co-CEOs Jan Wurzbacher and Christoph Gebald explain their vision to bring Climeworks’ CDR solution to gigaton scale: relying on renewable energy, a modular plant design, permanent CO? storage, and independent third-party verification to deliver a high-quality CDR service for companies. Watch it now to see our labs in Zurich and beautiful new footage of our Orca plant in Iceland!
