CELEBRITY AI SUIT
US comedian Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement. She alleges the companies trained their generative AI tools ChatGPT and LLaMA on her books, which were available to torrent on the web, without her permission. Authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey are also participating in the lawsuit. As evidence, they plan to show that ChatGPT can summarize their books perfectly but fails to offer any related copyright information.
NYT SHUTS DOWN ITS SPORTS DESK
The New York Times announced this week it will be redistributing its sports staffers to other departments and having the sports journalism website The Athletic take over its sports coverage as part of its subscription bundle that also includes recipes and crosswords. It promised zero layoffs, but some still consider it a cutthroat business decision.

GOOGLE’S NEW AI-POWERED SEARCH WILL MEAN BIG CHANGES
You’re about to make a quick weeknight dinner. You want to blanche some green beans but can’t quite remember how one goes about doing that (do you actually need ice, or will just cold water do?). You see a link titled “How to Blanche Green Beans”. Perfect. But when you click, the text has nothing to do with green beans! What you see instead is the first of many long paragraphs that starts out, “Growing up in Kentucky…” You frantically hit the Jump to recipe button, to no avail. You’re stuck reading a long, rambling text, kind of like the one you’re reading now.?
Well, that’s all about to end because whereas Google has rewarded food bloggers to fill out their recipes with original content with better search results, its new AI-powered search engine will now just tell you, ChatGPT style, how to blanche those green beans. It’s going to make cooking simpler, but it’s going to make SEO a lot harder. Try it in beta.
