That's Not In My Practice Today...

That's Not In My Practice Today...

I am really bad at yoga. I am trying to get better. But I am, quite objectively, really bad.

It's hard to continue to do things when you're really bad. That's why I go to class. But I'm also in a class at times with people who are really good at the thing I'm really bad at. Like yesterday.

I can just barely do a warrior pose without losing my balance, but I'm in a power yoga class on Sundays with folks who can do handstands, headstands, and all kinds of intricate poses. After the instructor, Erin, showed us one challenging pose to try, I quickly said, "There's no way I can do that!"

She corrected me just as quickly. "It's not that you cannot do this. You can. It's just not in your practice today."

And she was right. If I keep showing up and trying, one day, it may be in my practice. (I'm a bit skeptical at 54, but I was a bit skeptical at 24, too. And if I had kept showing up then, it probably would be in my practice today!)

Words matter. Just as much as listening to your body matters. So, stop yourself the next time you think, "I'm never going to be able to do this" (whatever this is). And remember...it's just not in your practice today!

Love this, Shawn! I can talk all day about the benefits of yoga on and off the mat ... you're learning how to find your version of the pose and reach your "edge". Use props, the wall, a sturdy chair, and/or modifications. You're yoga teacher was spot on!

Love the way this changes one’s perspective to a more optimistic and motivational approach to be better. Thanks for sharing!

I love this view of “practice”. I try to keep this in my head when working with medical professionals. They are “practicing” medicine. The best they know how to do at the time and as the science evolves, so too will the practice.
