A Thanksgiving Decision I’ll Never Regret

A Thanksgiving Decision I’ll Never Regret

For years Thanksgiving always started the same way: a night out with old friends. While I was out partying until late into the night, my aunts, uncles and cousins were trickling into my house. They would be asleep by the time I stumbled in, so I would tip toe upstairs and crash.

As I opened my eyes on Thanksgiving morning, my head immediately began to throb. Knowing I didn't get to see my family often, I would stumble downstairs, hug my relatives, and find a spot on the couch.

By early afternoon, I was typically in better shape. My head was clearer and I could start holding real conversations. We'd eat amazing food, throw the football around, and then end the night playing charades.

When I woke up the following morning, we'd have a quick breakfast together and they were off. I'd miss them immediately, and always felt like our time together was too short.

It took me years to realize the reason it felt short was because I was cutting it short. I was out drinking while my family arrived and too hungover to fully enjoy the day.

So a couple years ago, I tried something new: I still went out, but only had two drinks and got home earlier. The next morning, I felt fantastic. I spent the day laughing, playing games, and soaking up every moment. It was bliss.

I always thought that if I didn't drink I would miss out on things. But the truth? When I drank, I missed the best parts of the holiday.

This year, Kel and I woke up early to ski, had a beautiful meal with friends, and ended the day by the fire. No hangovers, no missed moments—just pure fun.

So here’s my punchline: questioning my relationship with alcohol gave me back time—time with the people I love, doing the things I love. And for that, I’m deeply thankful.

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

Ski season is back, and I couldn’t be happier.

Till next week, be kind, be curious and work hard.
