IEEE 802.1Q encapsulation is widely used in recent networks to logically isolate services in different broadcast domains at Layer 2 using a 12-bit VLAN Identifier field, allowing up to 4,094 VLANs. However, we cannot stop there. We also have 802.1Q-in-802.1Q, which uses double 802.1Q wrapers. QinQ provides us with the flexibility of VLAN planning on both the access and carrier sides and allows 4096 x 4096, or 16 million VLANs.

Importent Points:

  • Default Vlan like vlan 1 or default vlan for access, trunk and hybrid ports don't use any enpaculation
  • For transit nodes inbetween Switchies/ Routers in QinQ scenariou we only need to pass outer VLAN
