Thank you, Venice Commission!
I hardly ever share my opinions on social media, but...
Yesterday, the Venice Commission issued an Urgent Opinion on Georgia's law on foreign agents. The Georgian Parliament had just adopted this Law in third reading with outrageous amendments (e.g. obligating disclosure and denunciation of such information as the "sexual life" of so-called foreign agents) introduced surreptitiously. The President of Georgia used her right of veto, but the Parliament may still overcome that.
The Venice Commission, demonstrating once again its professionalism and impartiality, reached an unmistakably negative conclusion: it "strongly recommends repealing the Law" in view of "its fundamental flaws".
This Opinion sheds light on the authoritarian turn taken by the current Georgian Government, and should contribute to clarity in the positioning of the EU External Action Service and the EU Commission, who were expecting the Venice Commission's Opinion at the time of their prudent latest statement.
Thank you Venice Commission: there is no plausible deniability on what this Law is really about!
