Thank you Myrla!!
25 years ago I was "randomly" placed in the cube next to a person that would have a profound impact on my career, as well as hundreds of others in the global mobility world. In 1995, Myrla Marshall Lance and I were both new managers in a large organization trying to find our way. Even though she and I were and are very different people, we found a way of complimenting each other in a manner that I have never experienced in the workplace before.
The reason to launch this post now is that later this month Myrla is going to retire. She has been threatening to take this step for years and later this month she is going to make good on that promise to focus on being a grandma.
During the course of our careers at both Graebel and Allied, I have had the pleasure of doing leadership development with Myrla. One of the things we have always encouraged managers to do is to catch people doing something right and then put it into writing. It would be a total miss on my part to not tell the world what a great job Myrla has done over the course of a career and give the world an opportunity to do the same.
I believe Mylra is the living example of what Liz Wiseman described as a multiplier. She would never claim to be the smartest person in the room but she has the unique capability of making everyone else in the room smarter. She has the courage to create debate so that the best solution can surface and then she does an unequaled job of challenging people to give beyond what they think they are capable of.
I have no idea whether Myrla will be a good grandmother, but if the last 25 years is any indication, you can count on looking forward to feeling good for voting in the US elections in 2064.
