I’ve often wondered about the statement my wife makes of, “not everyone is like you.” It’s true that as human beings we are unique. We can look at the same circumstance and see it in a completely different way than other people. It makes you wonder how that’s even possible. It seems that how we perceive things depends on our own unique perspective and vantage point.?My wife, for example, considers how I conduct my work-life and career to be most unusual. ?It feels normal to me. ?

My job has always required extensive travel to meet with clients or vendors. I find my method to be exhilarating and very productive. Choosing to regularly meet up with clients or vendors across the world allows business partners to build satisfying relationships. Spending time together allows a much greater understanding of clients’ wants and needs, so it is easier to produce what they need. This usually leads to the discovery of innovative ways to meet goals and execute desired plans. Decisions can be accelerated, and processes can be expedited in a much faster way within this hands-on business style. During in-person meetings, you can get a real sense of what clients are seeking as you get to know them personally. Traveling to see customers, vendors, the market, and the world allows you to touch and feel it. To me, there is just a no better way.

It is common for me to wake up very early in the morning, get on several flights, change hotels, switch continents, prepare my materials and work many hours as in a marathon of sorts. It comes down to purpose – purpose is what drives me. The mutual respect, support, and encouragement I give and receive from many other people in the world are powerful motivators. Receiving and experiencing those positive gifts is something that encourages me to keep going and do what I do – even during difficult times.

Here is the lesson I’ve learned through the years and would like to share. For a life to be truly successful, it can only happen if you’re given the amount and quality of support that is required. This will give you the faith and confidence it takes to propel you to move those mountains. Experiencing that kind of backup allows you to have a laser-like focus to concentrate and execute tasks for that specific job at hand. There is nothing like that kind of security you feel knowing there are people in your life who deeply care about you and have your back.

The point I’m driving at -- is a concept above all of this. Even though as humans we have a basic need to earn a living and want career satisfaction; my family is higher on the priority list than anything else. ?Supporting my kids, watching them grow, and participating in their lives; is much more important to me than accomplishment. No one can do all of this alone so it’s crucial to recognize and show appreciation to the person or people in your life who are working in the background to make it all possible. These are the unsung heroes taking care of the day-to-day things; so you can do your best work and fulfill your passion. In my own life, the reason I was able to move at a higher speed was due mainly to one person – my wife. ?

All that I’ve been able to accomplish in my professional life has a first and a last name. She makes it possible for me to consistently be able to do what I consider “normal.” While I’m not proud of having to miss important family events, my wife continues to offer unconditional and unwavering support. ?She didn’t complain when I mistakenly went to pick up our kids at a school, they hadn’t attended for two years. I could describe literally thousands of times she demonstrated such support.

The second crucial support network is that of staff, peers, co-workers, and business partners. Having their respect and cooperation is essential. This is also true for leaders and is as critical as their ability to effectively lead. ?Other necessary qualities for your success include ambition, a sense of purpose, and belief that a client’s “no,” means being closer to a “yes. In whichever capacity you work, ?lead by example. Be the first to arrive and the last to leave. In this life whether in your family or career – you will meet with unexpected success if you have a compelling purpose, commitment to fulfilling it and the will to help your team, and of course the right support network– the glue that holds it all together.

The definition of success cannot be found in a dictionary it is written in our own book. All definitions of success are good when we have a clear idea of what we want and why we want it. Having a great purpose, adequate energy, and a reason to wake up every morning with a smile is possible when you have the support I have.
