Thank You

Thank You

I was an unlikely CEO and maybe even more unlikely public board director. The young girl born into a family of police officers, who quietly did her schoolwork at the family table in Queens never envisioned what was ahead for her. And yet, nearly six decades later I find myself looking back on a career that while wholly unexpected, has been so incredibly special.?

This week I’m retiring as executive chair of Synchrony ’s board. It’s a moment that’s of course filled with emotion. For nearly 20 years I’ve been a part of this business – watching (and for a time leading) its incredible transformation from business unit, to IPOed company, to 90-year old start-up, to a thriving Fortune 500 company. While the business evolved, one thing that remained steady was the extraordinary people who were – and are – at its heart. The greatest gift of my career has been working alongside so many of you and the lifelong friendships built. ?

I’ll be the first to tell you I didn’t always get things right. But I did always try lead humbly with the Vincentian virtues that were such an important part of my time as a student at St. John’s. I hope they shone through. Equally, I hope I’ve been able to set a positive example, while inspiring young girls to know there is no "unlikely" for them - only possibilities.?

This 40+ year career would not have been possible without those who’ve walked and worked alongside me – from those I shared a cube with as a call center rep, to those who coached me when I needed it most, who trusted in me when times were uncertain, and all those who helped build the special company that is Synchrony. I’m forever grateful for you. I’m also so deeply appreciative to the incredible directors (past and present) who taught me the meaning of stewardship. ?

This ride of a lifetime was made possible because of the love and support of so many – far more than I could hope to list here. But I learned a long time ago that it’s nearly impossible to lead without a strong foundation. My foundation has always started at home. I would not be the woman I am if not for my unbelievable husband Jerry and our wonderful children Kaity and Brian. Thank you for standing behind me and with me, lending me to others when needed, encouraging me in the moments where it was most needed, and being my rocks. I love you so very much. ?

To my other family – my Synchrony family – I’m so excited to see all that’s ahead. The future is so very bright. Know that in me you’ll have your biggest cheerleader, championing you always.?

So as I close the book on this chapter, I do so knowing just how lucky this Queens girl has been. I’m eternally thankful and blessed for the opportunities, the challenges, the lessons, and the memories. Grateful for the people who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself, who supported me, who challenged me, and who made me a better leader and a better person. I’m looking forward to what's next with curiosity, optimism, and a heart full of hope. After all, who knows what other unlikely adventures lie ahead.

A bit late to this commenting but reading them is like walking down memory lane. Not sure how you can slow down but your new direction whatever it is will be great. Again you are and we’re the best there is.

Such an incredible career. Thank you for always leading by example and giving us rising leaders a new path where authenticity and bold ideas are encouraged. Thank you for always sharing your story and being vulnerable as well. My husband thanks you too! One dinner you shared your love story with me and it opened my eyes to a possibility i didn't think was there. You influenced more than just careers ??
