Evaluation This song offers a very realistic experience for all Christians: life will involve suffering and loneliness. It is so easy to feel isolated in times of suffering, but it is essential to recognize that Christ is always for us and with us.

Overall, this song encourages Christians to rejoice always, continually pray, and give thanks in every situation because the ever-faithful God is deserving of all praise. In the first stanza, the songwriter expresses a great feeling of loneliness. The songwriter is standing alone, feeling hopeless. Yet, they still have a spirit of thanksgiving because they thank God for His consistent presence. They may not see hope, but they certainly know and confess that their hope is in Christ. This is reflective of Paul encouraging his readers to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Jesus Christ for you” (1 Thess. 5:18). The songwriter understands what Paul was teaching: the Christian life will involve suffering and feelings of loneliness, but the reality is we must give thanks because Christ is always working in and through us. In the second stanza, the songwriter provides more information on his current suffering and feeling of loneliness. All of his/her friends, who were once trusted confidants, have abandoned him/her.
Stanza 3 wonderfully incorporates the entire passage of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, and this may be considered the climax of the whole song. Despite experiencing a time of great loneliness, the songwriter is eager to pour out praise, prayer, and thanks! The songwriter recognizes that humans fail one another, but God never fails. Unlike humans, God always carries His people and stands by their side. This is wonderful news and is certainly deserving of praise.
